Rooted and Ready: Why Staying Present Matters

Aug 31 / Mary Jo Feely

Between the global headlines and the quiet, heavy challenges happening right inside our own homes and families, it can feel like there is nowhere to catch your breath. Every time we check the news or scroll through our phones, we face a wave of global stress, uncertainty, and collective pain. It is completely normal to feel overwhelmed, anxious, or exhausted.
When life feels hard, our minds naturally try to protect us by running away. We either worry about what might happen tomorrow, replay yesterday's stress—or both. However, escaping the present moment actually increases our suffering. True peace and true healing only live right here, right now.

Why the Mind Flees the Present

Your mind does not like pain. When the outer world feels chaotic, your brain looks for control.
Chasing Tomorrow: Your mind tries to predict every bad outcome so you can stop it. This creates anxiety.
Reliving Yesterday: Your mind reviews what went wrong, hoping to fix it in hindsight. This creates regret or sadness.
Neither place is real anymore. The future does not exist yet, and the past is gone. By staying there, you offer your present vitality to moments that are out of reach.

The Space Between Thoughts

This quiet space is the only place where we can truly experience peace.
It is where the heavy lifting stops: You do not have to carry the weight of next week or next year today. You only have to hold the weight of this single second.
It is where clarity crystallizes: True intuition doesn't speak through the noise of past memories or future anxieties. It speaks in the stillness of right now.
It is where your healing activates: Energy follows attention. When you place your attention fully in the present, your entire being aligns to heal.

Simple Ways to Reclaim Your Focus

You do not need hours of meditation to find the present. You can ground yourself in seconds using these simple tools:

Notice your breath: Take a slow, easy breath. Feel the air move in and out of your nose. Follow your breath as it moves into your body.
Feel your feet: Press your feet firmly into the floor. Notice the solid ground holding your weight.
Use your senses: Name one thing you see, one thing you hear, and one thing you can touch. This pulls your wandering mind back into your physical body.
When you stay present, you stop fighting the whole world at once. You only have to handle this one moment.
